Applying Innovative and Collaborative Approaches to Improve Student Learning and Enhance School Effectiveness
Innovation and collaboration are central to my professional identity. My Gamification Research, Desmos Professional Development Series and AI for Educators Professional Development Plan illustrate how I apply innovative and collaborative strategies to improve student learning and school effectiveness. The Gamification Research focuses on innovation and engagement through gamification and formative assessment while the Desmos Professional Development Series and AI for Educators PD Plan demonstrate teacher collaboration and shared reflection to improve instruction.

Gamification in the Secondary Classroom
This research project examines how gamification can be used as an innovative instructional strategy to deepen engagement, strengthen formative assessment practices, and improve learning outcomes in secondary math and science classrooms. By analyzing elements such as narrative, choice, challenge, and feedback loops, the study highlights how game-based design can transform traditional lessons into dynamic, student-centered experiences.
Research indicates that gamification fosters creativity, collaboration, and self-regulation, while game-based learning environments support practical problem-solving. Studies have also demonstrated that these methods improve students’ mathematical precision, critical thinking, and teamwork. Additionally, game-based learning has been linked to higher test scores and better retention compared to traditional teaching approaches. These findings suggest that gamification and game-based learning not only engage students but also lead to measurable academic gains, making them valuable tools for enhancing secondary education.
By adopting these methods, teachers can motivate students while fostering deeper learning and stronger critical thinking and problem-solving skills. To translate our research findings into a vision for change, we have designed a Professional Development Workshop that will not only educate participants on the latest research but also offer hands-on learning opportunities, equipping them to effectively implement gamification strategies in their classrooms.
This work directly supports Program Goal 3 by demonstrating how thoughtful innovation which is grounded in research and strategically applied, can enhance student motivation, promote active learning, and contribute to more effective schoolwide instructional practices.

The Power of Desmos: A Tool for Formative Data to Improve Instruction
This Desmos Professional Development series highlights how purposeful technology use can strengthen instruction across our online program. By introducing teachers to real-time feedback tools and digital activities that make student thinking visible, the PD supported schoolwide improvement in formative assessment practices. The collaborative structure, where teachers explored activities together, analyzed data, and reflected on next steps, helped build shared expertise and more consistent, responsive teaching. This PD fostered a culture of innovation and collective growth that directly enhanced student learning.
The mission of this professional development plan is to support middle school mathematics and science teachers in utilizing digital technology to enhance formative assessment practices. By providing teachers with the knowledge, resources, and skills necessary to implement effective formative assessment strategies, the goal is to improve instruction through the lens of student engagement and achievement in the classroom. Through continuous professional development opportunities and collaboration, this professional development plan seeks to create a community of educators who are committed to using data-driven initiatives to support student learning in math and science.
